About Myself

Hi, I’m Dr. Joyce Cheng — a Board-Certified Internal Medicine Hospitalist, Clinical Assistant Professor, and a lifelong advocate for patients and the people who care for them.

I practice hospital medicine, which means I specialize in the care of patients during one of the most vulnerable times in their lives: a hospital admission. Whether you’ve been admitted for an infection, a complex flare of a chronic illness, or something unexpected, my job is to be there — coordinating your care, communicating with your care team, and making sure you leave the hospital safer and better informed than when you arrived.

My path to medicine wasn’t a straight line. I was born in Hong Kong, grew up in Canada, and later pursued my undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences in California. I completed my medical degree overseas and finished all of my clinical training in Illinois, where I’ve built my career and community. Along the way, I earned a Master of Public Health (MPH) — because I believe that understanding why certain communities get sicker matters just as much as knowing how to treat illness — and a Master of Health Administration (MHA), because good medicine also requires good systems. I am a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), a distinction that reflects a commitment to excellence, ethics, and ongoing education in internal medicine.

I also serve as a Clinical Assistant Professor, which means teaching and mentoring the next generation of physicians is a role I take seriously and genuinely love.

This website exists for two reasons: to be a resource for patients and families navigating the hospital system, and to support medical students and residents who are walking the same road I once walked. I know how hard that road can be — and I know how much it helps to have someone show you the way.

Passion. Focus. Results.
